The Winter of 1985

Your grandma and grandpa never separated from each other except when he was in southeast Asia for many years. I think grandpa might have been away from the family maybe just a few times on business trips, but grandma never left him for an extended period of time. Except for the winter of 1985.

Now, in 1985 my uncle in Taiwan and my auntie, they couldn’t get back to China yet. But they traveled to Hong Kong and they invited my father to visit for a reunion. But grandpa couldn’t go, so grandma went instead. They were separated for a week. When your grandma came home from the reunion and my father saw her, he started to cry like a baby. He realized how attached he was. My father was emotionally very dependent on her towards the end of his life.
